Landmark Conviction for Chemsex Drug
A man in the UK has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for importing 500L of the drug, gamma butyrolactone or GBL; the precursor for GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate). This drug is sometimes known as liquid ecstasy and was recently classified as Class B under the Misuse of Drugs Act owing to the risks of dependence and overdose, particularly in the Chemsex context, as well as its implications in high profile in sex offending like the cases of Stephen Port (the s-caled Grindr killer) and Reynhard Sinaga (Britan’s most prolific rapist). This is the first known conviction of its kind for GBL importation and attempts to distribute.
